I'm Hanging Up My Shoes...Again!

As most of you know, last month I joined in on B.J. Anderson's unplug week. Well, I did partially, and by partially, I mean that I didn't post any new shoe pictures. It freed up my creative energy for writing, which I need to do now, so I'm going to partially unplug again. I will still post and read all of your blogs, but I apologize in advance for the lack of new shoe pictures for the week. Anyway, I have a few things to talk about today, so bear with me. I'll try to make it as short and sweet as possible. First of all, I need to announce the winner of last week's drawing. Please congratulate Janna Qualman who chose Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by Rhoda Janzen. Congratulations! I'll be in touch with you. Second, I want to thank Shelli for the Lemonade Award, and Nicolette for the Head In The Clouds Award. Thanks, ladies! Third, I hope you can all join me on Friday for an interview with K.M. Weiland, author of Behold The Dawn. I'm thrilled she chose to stop by here as part of her blog tour for the book's release. I hope you all pop in to hear what she has to say. Now, finally, Kristen Torres-Toro has given me five words to blog about, so I thought that while I'm "partially" unplugging this week, I'd do one word a day. So, today's word (or phrase) is: RETREAT. Since it has been unseasonably cold here, my answer to this is: in front of the fireplace after everyone else in the house is asleep. It's quiet. It's cozy. And it's my time do whatever I want. I usually end up writing because I consider that a retreat in itself, but if I don't feel like doing that, I read or watch television. Either way, I feel like it is a part of my writing life. My spot in front of the fire is either used for writing or as a break from writing. It's a win/win situation. So, what about you? Do you have a spot that facilitates both writing and a break from writing? If so, please share.

Congrats, on your awards!

Congrats, Janna, for winning the contest!

Very cool that you have a fireplace to sit in front of. Sounds relaxing. I've always wanted one. We were unseasonably cool too for a couple of weeks, but now we're back up to 100. Guess I wouldn't get much use out of a fireplace. :) And for me, writing is done at my desk. A break from writing means actually getting up and leaving my desk.

We have a wood stove that I enjoy and pretend I am somewhere else too. Glad you are getting a lot done and taking time to unplug from one reality to enjoy another. :O)

Congrats on your awards and congrats to Janna!

We had two bitter cold days and now we're having unseasonably warm weather. I have a pellet stove in my living room. My desk is on one side and my sofa on the other. It's nice! Keep yourself warm and enjoy your partial unplug!

A break from writing for me is at my second job on days I go there, or on my couch watching television when I get home on days when I don't go to said second job.

My spot for writing is my desk at the office. That forces me to do work because I feel like I need to be doing something.

Woohooo for Janna!

I love sitting on my swing outside. It's my favorite place. I don't do a lot of creative writing there--just journaling--but it's definitely my retreat!

My writing space is sitting on my bed. If I happen to be there at around 2 in the afternoon, well that's when it becomes nap time. If I'm on my bed at that time I cannot keep from falling asleep.

Enjoy unplugged week.

Yes, I write in a small room I call my prayer room. I pray there, too. It's my reading at night room, and my make-up room. It houses my small blue shelf of my favorite books. I'm there a lot.

Yay to Janna (and boo that I didn't win) and yay to you for your awards. My favorite retreat spot is my reading chair. I don't write in it, since I do all my writing at the computer, but it is cozy and comfy.

My spot is the chaise lounge in the family room, with the fireplace in the corner. Living in Texas I haven't had to use it yet, but it still feels very cozy.

I may have to try this Unplugged week next time around!

Happy writing

We haven't used our fireplace since last winter. It might be time to get it going again. I hope you have a very productive Unplugged week!

Well done on the awards and having the courage to unplug again.
We have a partial covered pergola at the top end of our garden, we call it the love shack. It is my place, that and the vineyards. See you again soon. :)

I think maybe I need to unplug. I wish I had a laptop so I could write in inspiring areas of my house or outside, instead I'm stuck in the basement, listening to my earphones as my boys play Halo 3 (and by boys I include my husband).

I like to unwind on the soccer field, it's one of my favorite things to do that and take long walks by myself.

Congrats for the awards, Susan. I admire you being able to unplug and focus on your writing. I have a little room in the attic that is all my own. There's an antique iron daybed in there, plus my desk and two big cozy wing chairs in the softest linen. It also has a beautiful crystal chandelier, and candles everywhere. It's all in various shades of white and it is so comforting and relaxing.
By the way, hubby finally managed to send that package off this morning! So sorry that it's taken so long.)

Congrats, Janna! I may have to unplug next week, just to finish up my writing before NaNo.

We'll miss you!

I want a fireplace, I think that would be a nice place to relax.

I guess I don't really have a place, though I would like one. I think maybe I should create one, away from the computer. I think that would facilitate writing.

Ooh, a fire sounds nice. However, it will be a long time before it gets cold enough here for such things.

My spot is in my bed while my husband puts my toddler to bed. It's lovely, quiet alone time where I can read or work on plot issues and such with my WIP. I guard that half hour of my day like it's gold.

My office. I look out the windows and think. And write. I find pure solace when I write. I get lost in it.

Enjoy your unwind week. You are an incredibly dedicated blogger, that's for sure!

Our den is where I usually work, but I like to outline at the kitchen table. My usual retreat spots are outside the den. Like you, though, I sometimes come in here to read--and of course, blog!

I just commented over on Cindy Wilson's blog that I think I misunderstood the whole "unplugging" concept - I thought it was only once a year *snort*. You'll be missed.

Retreat for me means my bathtub with a glass of wine. I need a retreat. Badly.

I love your retreat. Fireplaces are soooo cozy! My retreat is my newly organized office. I write in there, but I also have a comfy chair and bookshelves with my favorite books. It's the perfect retreat!

Have a great unplugged week!

I have a couple of spots in my house that I enjoy curling up with a good book or my computer. One is in front of the fire, one is in my office away from the rest of the house, and I have a favorite chair in a sunny living room. If I'm reading or writing, I go to whichever place the kids aren't playing.

Sounds peaceful! Makes me want a fireplace.

When its really cold, like 30 or 40 below, I migrate from my treadmill writing desk upstairs to the glider rocker next to the woodstove.

My bedroom chair...I've shown you views from my spot. It's wear I sit to write, (I'm sitting there now) and where I sit to just enjoy the peace and quite when I'm not outside.

Eileen Astels Watson said...

I wish I did! And congrats on the lemonade award.

No, I don't have any spot really. The second I go somewhere, my kids follow me. Like right now my daughter is on my lap and trying to bang on the keyboard.

Anissa said...

I just sit on the couch, in the middle of it all, and try to let my brain carry me away. LOL!

I do have a spot on the sofa, next to a big Japanese lamp and a side table filled with towers of books, notebooks and a beeswax candle on top. I cannot seem to be able to move from this place.

Kelsey (Dominique) Ridge said...

Congrats.

I hope you have fun unplugging.

In the summer, I tend to write outside. I like the sun. In the winter, I tended to write wherever I am, whenever I can find time.

I have a chaise lounger that looks out our front bay window and my flower garden. I love to sit there and read, and that's also my brainstorming spot when it's time to think about a new project!

I write at my desk in my office. I also email and view blogs. (And sometimes play spider solitaire. but that's a secret). So, yes, I guess I do do both work and play here. But I also hold a coveted spot by the fire too.

Aww I completely understand taking a break. I actually saw shoes hanging from a power line today and I was like Omg that's like in that lady's blog, Cool!! Congrats on the award!!

Thank u for the lovely comments. I struggle with finding somewhere combines writing & not writing. So I go somewhere I can just let my mind wander. Like Driving or riding on a train. My brain is at rest but then I'm so full of ideas I just can't wait to write them down. =)

I hope you have a good week!!

My brain never really takes a break. And to be honest when it does, I just get more creative ideas that I want to write down. My desk is a retreat of sorts. And my little guy has room to be with me in my office. I like having the kids around. I can write in all sorts of distractions... sometimes :).

Good for you for taking the opportunity to unplug. I've been toying with that idea too. I'm signed up to do NaNoWriMo in November and it would probably be a good idea. Whenever my office isn't trashed (it is the home catchall for clothes, books etc.. that need to be given away) I write there. It is painted a very zen shade of green and I love it. I also write, think, knit, read on my bed and in a chair in the family room. All three spots are MINE - well, kinda, anyway :)

Well goodness, this post totally blew by me. Thanks so much, Susan! I'm very excited!

And I love what you said about "retreat." Sounds perfect.
